Broad Rib

Broad rib is a variation of rib knitting that uses wider combinations of plain and purl stitch wales, such as 2×2 (Swiss rib), 6×3 (Derby rib), or even 10×3. This pattern creates pronounced and bold ribbing, offering less elasticity but a more distinct visual texture.

Characteristics

  • Reversible when balanced: The fabric can be reversible when the number of knit and purl stripes is equal.
  • Durable and dense: Provides a robust and stable texture while being soft to the touch.
  • Excellent widthwise elasticity: Offers stretch across the width of the fabric, but purl knit columns may appear less prominent when fine yarns are used.
  • Elasticity decreases with wider ribs: The broader the rib, the less elasticity the fabric provides.
  • No curling: The edges remain flat without curling.
